Data Transfer Race

November 26, 2007 by Kevin Hazard, Web Hosting Evangelist in The Planet

Have you ever wondered how fast The Planet’s network transfers files? Yes, we know that we’ve got great connectivity and screaming-fast interlinks, but our CFO asked us to indulge him in an experiment to find quicker ways to transfer data between our Houston and Dallas data centers: A Data Transfer Race.

If you’d rather watch the video on YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook, we’ve got you covered. You can also consider this the perfect opportunity to “Friend” us accordingly. :-)

P.S. Be sure you watch the last clip following the credits … Yee-haw!

Update: I read a few positive reviews touting Blip.tv’s quality and ease of use, so the video is posted there as well.

haha… it’s like “The Chicken or The Egg.” Which came first? Four-day weekends or 30 year-old scotch?

It’s a good idea to have a professional production company make your video. Trying to do it yourself…youtube style…maybe a lot of fun but it gives your customers the impression that you are a small mom and pop operation
Just thought I’d mention it after viewing your video

Yikes, only impression this gives, is that The Planet spends their day messing about making stupid videos, if anyone in that video helped me as a customer, I’d not be best pleased. Then again, by the looks of it they spend more time playing table tennis and watching a file transfer, uh is this what the NOC does? Fair enough to make a mess about video, but a more professional video would have been nice.

Interesting observations… While we never intended a “just for fun” blog video to be representative of the daily operations of our 500+ person, 23,000+ customer business, but I respect that you would rather watch a more “commercial” video. Training a camera on a hundred folks doing their job in a tech support call center might not have much production value, though … seeing as how this video clearly proves that they spend more time playing table tennis and watching file transfers than actually working. :-)

You would think the CFO knows where the Data Center is ;)

I want Phil’s job, but with the viper.

Dang guys!! Lighten up its just a video no harm done. Of course they do there job why else would they be the best in the industry? What’s wrong with some table tennis? I am no doctor but 8-10 hr days on the computer and taking customer calls the entire time is not healthy and maybe, just maybe, some table tennis is a good way to getting some physical activity and keeping you sane.

    Very nice video!
